Online Photo Book Printing Companies:

Where Priceless Memories Become Timeless Books

July 2019

Laura Emery, Field Editor

Long gone are the days of fumbling to insert photographs into flimsy photo album sleeves. Technology and a hunger for transforming digital pixels into long-lasting keepsakes have given us a multitude of options for preserving precious photographic memories. You can put photos on just about anything these days — puzzles, mugs, pillows, blankets, keychains, coasters, ornaments, etc.

Whether it’s a cherished photo of the family dog asleep on your chest or a snapshot of your newborn’s first smile, photos are a visual representation of life. And what better way to enjoy the beautiful memories of life than to put them into a printed photo book to be cherished for years to come?

You can create baby books, wedding albums, school yearbooks, holiday memory books, professional photographer portfolios, scrapbooks, family photo albums and so much more. Photos are printed as part of the pages themselves, just like on a coffee table book. You can also add your own text and customize the whole design to meet your personal needs.

Digital photo book printing companies are constantly trying to outdo each other: bringing down prices, increasing the range of options, improving quality, making the creation process more fun and so on. But selecting the right photo book printing website for you can be an overwhelming task. Each site has different strengths and weaknesses. Here are reviews of websites that this writer has used.

Shutterfly.com

Shutterfly is one of the most popular photo book websites. With a wide variety of designs and layouts, there’s a higher chance that your photo book will look unique. Shutterfly also has plenty of options. You can get a custom-printed cover, hard cover, soft cover, padded cover, or leather or fabric cover (with die-cut window). It also offers a variety of book sizes to meet any need. The pages are thick and matte, and spine printing is available and very easy to do. You can even create a dust jacket (available as an upgrade) for your special book.

Another great thing about Shutterfly: It’s always making special offers or sending coupon codes in the mail or through email. If you thought their original prices were good, you can probably do even better. Shutterfly never deletes your photos, and photo storage is free, unlimited and stored at full resolution. When creating a photo book, you can choose to have it created instantly, or you can customize it yourself page-by-page. Photo book sizes: 5x7, 7x9, 8x8, 8x11, and 12x12.

Snapfish/Walmart/Walgreens

Snapfish is also a big name in the photo book business. But what you might not know is that Walmart.com and Walgreens.com use the same software as Snapfish for a slightly lower price. Like Shutterfly, Snapfish has a wide variety of options when it comes to book sizes and covers. Dust jacket book, hardbound, softbound, custom cover; there are a lot of choices. The paper quality is thick and has a glossy sheen to it (80 lb. archival quality acid-free paper). It’s sure to make even the most amateur photo look its best. At Snapfish, you can create a photo book up to 150 pages. It offers the following sizes: 8x11, 8x8, 5x7, and 12x12 (available with only one cover option). A downside to Snapfish photo books is that there is not an extensive offering of up-to-date designs. Layouts are also limited. But for someone who wants to keep it simple and appreciates convenience, that might be a good thing.

Mixbook.com

If you’re looking for a truly custom book, Mixbook is the place to go. Unlike a lot of the other photo book websites, Mixbook gives users much greater ability to personalize books and not just by selecting backgrounds and layouts. Mixbook goes one step further by allowing you to add text anywhere, rotate text, add stickers, overlap text and images, create shadows and different shapes with your photos. You can move, crop, rotate, pan and zoom on photos; add stickers and backgrounds; and create custom layouts. The possibilities are endless with Mixbook’s powerful and easy editor.

MySocialBook.com

Here’s a photo book option that requires little to no work on your part. When MySocialBook founder Nicolas Cazagou invented the Social Book concept in 2010, his idea was to transform his greatest moments and milestones already recorded on social networks into a permanent book. Here’s how it works. By printing your Facebook timeline, which already includes your status updates, posts and photos in chronological order, you get much more than just a plain old photo book. You get posts and photos already time-stamped, along with the comments from family and friends. You can revisit, share and enjoy these memories in detail forever, and pass them down through generations. Simply allow MySocialBook access to your Facebook account and let the app do the rest!
