Some Happy Musings

November-December 2019

The holidays add a sprinkle of magic to our cultural foundations of family, home and community. Here are three popular hometown events to help celebrate the season in traditional rural Virginia style.

The “Best on the Northern Neck” Oyster Roast is planned for Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum. There is a limited number of tickets and all will be sold in advance. Call 804-453-6529 to get yours today.

The 40th Annual Farmville Christmas Show will take place Nov. 9-10 at the Farmville Sports Arena and features more than 50 vendors and no admission fee. All proceeds benefit STEPS, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that assists residents of 11 Southside Virginia counties through workforce development, HeadStart education services and housing assistance.

Another joyful celebration is Christmas in Candy Land, South Boston’s annual homage to the spirit of the season. Planned for Saturday, Dec. 7, this year’s event will feature marching bands, floats, live music and antique vehicles, horses and an appearance by the Jolly Old Elf himself.

If you’re wondering what to give someone on your holiday gift list, consider Virginia peanuts. For more than a quarter century, the Good Earth Peanut Company of Skippers ( has provided tasty, made-to-order gift baskets and popular assorted nut samplers perfect for the holidays.

The Virginia Peanut Growers Association is the research, promotion and education entity for Virginia’s peanut farmers. The Association jointly maintains the website with North and South Carolina growers. On this site, customers can shop for famous Virginia peanuts from various retailers and have them shipped in time for holiday enjoyment.

A great gift idea for older friends and relatives is Arm Chaps, which protect from palm to forearm against the scratches, cuts, bruising and more. Visit for all the benefits and hundreds of uses.

Finally, if you’re still stuck on what to give, consider Cooperative Living magazine. For $10, you can give a year’s worth of happy reading. To give a gift subscription, contact Nina Jacobs at 804-297-3445.
